Paul Risseeuw Sportsmanship Award
2022
Marin Redmond and Emily Warn
In 2022 the board received numerous exemplary nominations for both Marin Redmond and Emily Warn. Consequently the honor this year is awarded to both Marin and Emily.
Marin Redmond
Recognized by her fellow sailing enthusiasts as an exceptional sailor and an outstanding sportsman, Marin “has an obvious love of sailing” and “constantly offers encouragement to other sailors,” according to those who nominated her. A few times this summer when she was put at a disadvantage through no fault of her own, Marin, who belongs to the Niantic Bay Yacht Club, didn’t complain or protest, according to one person who nominated her. Rather, she used the experience as a learning opportunity. “She is always modest and respectful,” according to one submission, and “a true beacon of sportsmanship, and a great member of the community,” according to another.
Emily Warn
Despite having very little knowledge of sailing when she started with Ram Island Yacht Club six years ago, Emily is now a competent junior instructor. This summer, before participating in afternoon classes and regattas, she aided her club’s instructors most days of the week and still thirsted for more. According to one submission, Emily is “happy to be in the boat whether she is instructing, learning, or racing, whether she’s winning or losing.” According to another, “Emily will make friends with anyone, she will help anyone, and she always gives 100 percent.” A member of Stonington Harbor wrote, “Emily is an all-around great example of the spirit of sailing and sportsmanship. I could often hear her cheering on other junior sailors as they crossed the finish line or made a solid cross past her while on port. She helped everyone enjoy the important parts of a classic ESCA summer: sailing fast, having fun, and making lifelong friends.”
