Please read this entire page carefully. 2024 Season Scoring is changed to a Low Point Scoring system.

ECSA SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS

ECSA tracks junior sailor's racing results each season and awards trophies for those with the best scores in the following categories:

  • 420 Overall (top 3)

  • 420 Girls Team (top 3)

  • Optimist Red (top 5)

  • Optimist White (top 5)

  • Optimist Blue (top 5)

  • Optimist Top Girl (top 3)

Awards are presented at the annual ECSA Junior Awards Event.

Each ECSA Junior Program junior regatta (all competitors must be younger than 19 for all of the current year) is a qualifying event with the exceptions that:

  • Green Fleet

  • Team Racing

  • Any regatta where the 420 Fleet has fewer than 8 boats*

  • Any regatta where the Optimist Fleet has fewer than 10 boats*

results do not qualify for season scoring.

*Note: ECSA Junior Sailing reserves the right to adjust these minimums during the season based on regatta fleet sizes observed.

Number of races to qualify

420 Fleet: 3 races

Optimist Fleets (Red, White, Blue, Girls): 5 races

If a sailor does not sail the number of races indicated, s/he is not eligible to win a season award. Season position is calculated using the sum of the best points earned at the required number of regattas. Meaning the best five scores for Optimist, three for 420. The result of this is you are eligible for an award after sailing the required number of races. Sailing additional races in addition to the required number can improve a sailor’s position if s/he does well in a subsequent regatta. Doing poorly cannot hurt your score.

Scoring for season awards

Season Championship Awards are scored using a low point system using the finish position in the competitor’s best regattas (best 3 regattas for 420, best 5 regattas for Optimist). Low points will be assigned based on the competitor’s finishing position in their division. For example, the sailor who finished first in Blue division will receive 1 point for that regatta.

Points awarded are equal to the division finish position (First = 1 point, Second = 2 points, and so on) as described in RRS A4.1 “Low Point Scoring.”

If a tie between competitors exists after all regattas are completed, Racing Rules of Sailing, Appendix A8.1 and A8.2 shall be used to determine the final position. If a tie remains, both competitors will be assigned the relevant position and receive the appropriate award.
